As a Church school, St Luke's is managed by a governing body. This means that whilst some responsibilities remain with the Local Education Authority (the Education Directorate of the Bournemouth Council), the governors, together with the Head Teacher and senior management team are responsible for the appointment of staff, the admission of children, the provision of a balanced curriculum and the maintenance of the fabric of the school buildings.
The governing body is appointed by the Diocese of Winchester within which Bournemouth lies, and appointments are delegated to the Deanery of Bournemouth (a sub-division of the diocese) and the local parish of St Luke's which gives the school it's name and which was responsible for the foundation of the school over a hundred years ago. The make-up of the governing body is ordered by an Instrument of Government which at the present time is being re-constituted in accordance with government guidelines. We have increased the size from 16 members to 18, bearing in mind the increase in size of the school over recent years and the need for adequate representation from both infant and junior departments. As a church school 'foundation' governors must have a majority and is also important that some parent governors qualify as foundation governors by their commitment to a Christian church.
The governing body will consist of six parent governors (of whom three will be eligible as foundation governors), one local authority governor, four staff governors (of whom one shall be Head Teacher) and ten foundation governors (to include the three parent governors mentioned above).
